Real Life Geometry

For Extra Credit, you may post your answers to my blog question. Please remember that anyone can read your statement(s), so please take your time, think about your audience, and what you are going to post BEFORE you publish. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR LAST NAME! I recommend this as the best way to post - "John K. per 2" Please make sure you QUOTE and CITE all your references. You cannot take someone else's work and call it your own. That would be Plagiarism.

How is Geometry applied in real-world situations? Be SPECIFIC, meaning choose an area of focus such as arts, sports, architecture, etc... and go into depth on that subject. You may also include a real world problem that uses Geometry. Your response should be at least three paragraphs long. Please respond to at least one other student. It should be at least one paragraph long and be a well thought out response. I am looking that you took time to read up on your subject and formulate your thoughts into good creative writing. You can bring your on opinions into your post. In fact, that might be good, because opinions give the opportunity for others to respond to your post.

I have included a sample response:

Geometry in Nature

Nature speaks of Geometry with its patterns and shapes - from the smallest atom to a daisy or a spider’s web. Have you ever dropped a pebble into a still pond? How does the water move? What shape is formed? Have you ever observed the shape of an orange - only to slice it open and notice a new pattern is formed by many triangles?

When I googled Nature in Geometry, it seems the term Sacred Geometry kept coming up. My understanding is that it could be a spirituality/philosophy/religion, talking about the cosmos and creation in various cultures. It seems that Sacred Geometry could also be considered the science of nature. However, some have distorted Sacred Geometry and reduced it to spirit channeling. There were even a few schools of Sacred Geometry. According to one website, Sacred Geometry is “an ancient science that explores and explains the energy patterns that create and unify all things, and reveals the precise way that the energy of Creation organizes itself. On every scale, every natural pattern of growth or movement conforms inevitably to one or more of these geometric shapes.”

Although I am uncertain about the spiritual aspect of Sacred Geometry, I did think there were some interesting things that were brought up. According to Sacred Geometry, nature seems to use a certain and exact set of numbers and proportions over and over. What was particularly interesting to me was phi (or the Golden Ratio). Phi seems to show up not only in nature, but also in art and architecture. Phi is an irrational number which is approximately 1.618… Phi can be seen in the growth of a plant. A stem grows and sprouts a leaf, grows and sprouts another leaf, grows and sprouts another leaf. The stem is growing in a spiral direction, meaning if we were to connect the tips of the leaf it would form a spiral. In an overwhelming majority of plants, it seems the angle of growth from one leaf to another is about 137.5 degrees, which is really 1 over phi to second power times 360 degrees. To me this is extremely fascinating that even nature seems to follow a set of mathematical rules.

Geometry is applied in real-world situations like construcion work, art and moderen day Astronomey. Geometry can help with finding lengths, areas, missing angles and volumes. Geometry can help you find coordinates within a map.

Geometry within art are the different shapes or Symmetry that artist use. Geometry within moderen day Astronomey can be used to form many patteren in points, lines, and angles formed through stars. Many arstronomers use geometry principles and sophisticated observatoriesand equipment in their work. Constuction Builders use geometry to plan to build a hosue. They use geometry art to help them with their work. They draw many angles, planes, segements, and points in their work.

Geometry is very useful in daily life. Geometry has different forms. It is very useful to use.
Geometry has been used by many famous mathmaticions. Geometry has been used to crate many new things.

Geometry is applied in the real-world in many ways. One of those ways in in construction. Construction applies theorems, postulates, and definitions, to finish the job. If the designer did not know geometry, many of todays great designs wouldnt be the way they are.

If you are not in constructions, you may also encounter problems as you do everyday chores. You might want to make a ramp for your skateboard or bicycle. To do so, you must know the angle and lenght of the ramp. Geometry in this situation is very helpful, becuase it will guide you through the procedures. Not knowing geometry while building a ramp is like an airplane without wings, it just wont work.

Without knowing the definiton of the word parallel, it is very hard to drive in the modern world. Most streets are adressed by what they are parallel to. If you do not understand the definition of skew lines, you will never understand the freeway overpass. In conclusion, geometry may be very helpful in your life. It helps with many common tasks, and lets your brain think in a way which was never possible.

Okay well geometry is used in real life situations such as architect... when the poeple are going to build a building they use many things we use in geometry. They use construdctions 1-6 and to be able to use these constructions the meausurements have to be exact. This also includes geometry because angles and triangles and other shapes are used they have to know if they ae congruent or not. We also use inductive and deductive reasoning in our every day life... we expect things to happen in life because they happened before but deductive reasoning teaches us that, that isn't true. Pretty much we mainly use geometry when we are building something but if it was just math in particular we use when we get money, when we go to the bank, if we loan or borrow. Either way we use geometry we are going to buld something or even when we are just measuring something.

Geometry is another math content we learn in our lives. I know that we sometimes ask each other "When are we going to use geometry in the real-world”? It’s hard to think of real-life situations, but if you sit down and think really hard, you may find an answer. There are many situations that Geometry is used. Here are some examples that I have researched and thought about.

"When and where is geometry used in our lives?
Well, if you ever plan on building cars, geometry is involved in making cars. In addition measuring vehicles involves geometry. Buildings are built by using shapes and compasses. For example, when our school was being built, the blueprint consisted of geometry. Architects for sure use geometry in their daily lives. Railroad maps include geometry, the routes of the maps and the direction it goes involves geometry. There are so many uses of geometry in real-life.

There are more examples of geometry in real-life.
When you want to know how much wallpaper it will take to cover your wall, geometry has the answer. In addition when you want to know the volume of your pool, geometry also is needed. Oh, I know a good example, when your parents are planning to install new rugs in your home, geometry definitely is used. Construction is consisted of geometry also. These are some ways geometry is used in the real world.

Geometry involves angles and shapes. We tend to ask ourselves, "How is geometry applied in real-world situations?” Mechanics that build cars use geometry in their daily life. We ask, "How do they use geometry?"

Geometry is used by mechanics daily. Building cars requires measuring the width of the seats, engine, and the car. In addition, geometry is used in vehicles to measure the amount of gas and oil the car needs. I think geometry consists a lot of shapes and angles. That’s the main idea from what I think personally. There’s not really much more to say. It’s amazing how geometry is involved in building cars.

Geometry is such a big word when we hear it. We think that geometry isn’t applied in many real-world situations, but if you do some research, you will be amazed of how many jobs require geometry. I think geometry will continue to grow in various areas and will be used to create amazing technology. Geometry has so much to teach us.

geometry is used in real life when we do architecture. Have you ever passed by a building and thought about the shapes that make up the building? Well everyday we see shapes in our life, when we see a building we see many differnent shapes such as triangles, lines, and points.

when we see a basic building we see squares. Theses squares are made up of angles and line segments. The basic foundation of a building is a rectangle after you have that you add other shapes such as squares and triangles.

The parts of geometry we use to make these buildings are consrtuctions 1-6. They help us to know the exact measurements that we need to use and the exact angles. well if you want to be an architecture then i suggest that you brush up on geometry.

Geometry can be used in many in many states of matter. It is used in stock marketing, you must need to know geometry to be an architect, and it is used for just to apply for a job you would need to no math and/or geometry. Geometry helps handle money.

To be an architect you must need to know the different shapes and angles that there are. Its also similar in a way. If you miss one little thing in a lesson you could be lost in the upcoming lessons. Just like in building you mess up one little thing the whole building could fall apart. An architect must know and must make sure an angle of a brick or any other needed item is the right size and shape. In stock marketing you will needto know how to handle money and how to manage your money wisely.

Geometry is applied in everyday life like looking to drive on a street to buying a candy bar in the vending machine. You must know what kind of angle turn your gonna make. You need to know what the appropriate amount of money to use for a vending machine.

Geometry is used in a major factors for things all over the world such as jobs. Some professions that use geometry alot are Carpenters,Engineers, and Architects. Architects and Carpenters use Geometry to make houses and buildings with parallel sides and even angle and/or corners. This makes you safe and secure. Engineers use geometry to help them by using protractors to make bridges with even and level angles. They also need it to make and ships and airplanes. A navigation system in a car plane ship or anything else relys on a navigation system and a navigation system need geometry to get the right cordinance. In geometry you need to know and understand all shapes, sizes, and pictures or you could be lost. In geometry if you miss one lesson then you might be lost for the next upcoming lessons. Pay attention in geometry AND STAY IN SCHOOL! (All though i could care less if you drop out) JUST KIDDING!

Geometry is used everyday in real-world situations. Geometry is used either in sports or other things. People use geometry in sports to form plays and to help them get a better understanding of geometry. Waterpolo players use geometry to form a six on five. Which is a play that involves all lot of geometry.
The play six on five involves four players lined up in front of the goal and two players in the top. This play forms many shapes. Two shapes this play forms is two right angled triangles. These triangles maybe congruent. If the players move into a different spot they form a isosceles triangle. This makes it easier for the players to make a goal because they are keeping the goalie to one side of the goal. Another shape they make is a line segment. In this play it uses geometry all lot in order to make goals.
Geometry is very useful in real-world situations. Everyone uses geometry without knowing it too. Someone can use geometry through sports, constructions, and many more things. Geometry is a very useful resource when it comes to solving plays for a game to get that winning shot or point. No matter what someone will always use geometry everyday.

Geometry is used in many ways in our everyday live's. Recently I discovered that one of my hobbies, the Rubik's Cube, is just a large geometry problem.

"Heirna Rubiks Magic Puzzle Cube is something that has frustrated millions of people since its release in 1980".
-Dan Brown
Rubik's Cube guide

Now the point of this cube is to manipulate the sides of the cube to all have same color pieces. Using geometry, (and some trigonometry) we can easily, well "easily", Solve the Rubik's Cube.

If you first observe the cube you will notice its shape. It is a cube filled with many little squares (54 to be exact). This is your first (and most obvious) example of geometry in the cube. Now if you remember your geometry you will know that a square is an equilateral equiangular quadrilateral.

The method used in solving the cube is not what most people think. It is very commonly believed that after you solve one side you go directly to another. That is incorrect; you first solve one side then continue to work your way up from there. This is where trigonometry comes into play. You use "Algorithms" to solve the cube. Algorithms are basically a set of moves that if repeated will manipulate something into becoming something else for a predetermined number of times then return it to its original form. one simple algorithm requires moving a corner piece of the cube into the correct corner. You first place the corner on the corresponding side of the corner ist needs to be placed in and do the algorithm RI DI R R and repeat it until the piece has been moved to the corresponding correct corner of the cube.

(note. if you dont know what this means there are plenty of rubiks cube guides online that will explain to you what these letters mean.)

So as you can see the rubiks cube is just one example of Geometry (and trig too.) in our (or my) personal lives.

I agree with the things that Ryan has said, about geometry being used in art because I draw, and I see the lines that connect to other lines, and lines that connect to angles.I also see that when drawing a person, the eyes are parallel to each other, and that each part of the body can form an angle.Like your arm for example, your arm can form a ninety degree angle, and your leg can also form an angle.

Geometry is used in many different ways that you can apply to real life situations. For example, one way to use geometry is by using it in architecture. Architecture is a profession of designing buildings, open areas, communities, etc. It usually includes design, decorations, construction work, or even remodeling existing buildings. I have chosen Architecture because I think students will learn to recognize that the importance of geometry is allowed in art design and that geometry allows students not only to expand their ideas but in a variety of ways. Students can learn to understand geometric concepts and formulas to try and relate it to their own real life situation or even something they do in their daily routine.

In Architecture, you may or may not have known this but you use geometry basically to create your own construction. Without geometry, you wouldn’t be able to design buildings or do any kind of decorating or construction work because in each and every step, you use geometry to calculate where you want something to be whether it’s length, width, area, volume, etc. Architecture includes figuring out the perimeter, area and volume of geometric objects and you can use these to find measures of any kind of common object. In Architecture, you also use different shapes like circles, triangles, squares, octagons, polygons, you name it and many different shapes will help you form construction to build communities, open areas or buildings. Estimating and using postulates and theorems will help you understand planes, segments, angles, line segments, skew lines, intersecting lines and much more.

The way geometry can be used in many ways is just incredible because we may or may not realize it, but we use math probably in our everyday life. Maybe now after having students read this, students will recognize that geometry isn’t just numbers and facts, but it also includes creativity and imagining different diagrams to construct something new. Geometry is a great example to compare it to architecture and much more other real life situations.

I agree with all of you when you say that geometry is applied to many real world situations, jobs, activities and even sports. For example, a great deal of geometry is used in the great game of Basketball.

Geometry is used in the game of Basketball through the basic offensive and defensive skills. When a player arches his jumpshot , drives the ball in for a lay-up, or is even trying to block a shot.

In more detail , when an experienced player shoots a basketball, he/she puts arch into his shot . He/She decides what kind of arch he is going to put under the ball but the length of the shot. Depending on how his feet are planted, and whether or not he is fading away has a lot to do on the effect of his shot. The player would want to arch the ball a little more to get more range and receive a bit more accuracy than he would if he would've shot it straight at the basket. The same applies for when the player shoots a bank shot (shot off the backboard). The player has to shoot the ball at a high enough arch, so that the angle the player is trying to make with the ball will end up with 2/3 points.

Another example of how Geometry is put into basketball is when a player goes up for a lay-up. The player runs at a certain speed, preferably at an angle to the basket. When he is close enough to put the ball up, the player has to decide at what kind of angle to shoot the ball. He has to hit the right part of the glass to make the ball sink through the net.

My final example of how Geometry is used in Basketball is when a player is attempting to block a shot. I literally consider the blocking player's arm and the ball two lines that will eventually meet at some point. Hence the idea of intersecting lines. You can put my theory into other type of Geometry terms such as a segment or angle bisector. The player's arm, hand and body is the bisector that is literally cutting the shot in half and ending the attempt.

Now I conclude my essay of how I believe that Geometry is used in the game of basketball. I took you through the basic skills of basketball and some basic definitions of Geometry, and that ends my essay.

Egyptians started to use geometry in around 3000 B.C., which are based on lengths, angles, areas, and volumes. This led on the Egyptians to doing surgery, construction, astronomy, and various crafts. The earliest known texts on geometry in Egypt are the Egyptian Rhind Papyrus. Geometry is and was used around the world even though back then and now are different we just took on the past mathematic terms and just improvised it for today’s technology. For today’s society we use geometry for everything like sports, building houses, cars, and etc. Geometry is based on using your head to get the technology of today right and secure.

Geometry is used for anything, but I want to be specific. I want to explain how it is used in soccer. Ever moment in soccer is about placement. How are you placing your body to kick the ball? Its the way you place your body for it the way the ball going. Like if you put your back and your feet place in front like an obtuse angle the ball will go up. If you place your like an acute angle the ball will be rolling on the floor. But if you place your body in a right angle the ball will go perfectly in the air but not to high also not to low.

Soccer is geometry, but you might not think of it as geometry. Geometry is in everything soccer is one of the many things geometry is in. Soccer is not only kicking the ball in air, but its also passing 1-2 which is forming an acute angle but the two people passing are the two points of a segment. Which it is easy once you see it.

Commenting Greg k. per.1

Why is so hard for constructing to be made is it because of their way they constructing it or are they just having trouble putting their equations together? Why that geometry is is involve in chores? Little 10 years don’t know what geometry is and they are able to do their chores, well maybe if they even do their chores. Why is geometry the basic fact in construction? What happen to algebra?

That cool that geometry is in construction. It must be really hard for them to do their work. It must take a lot of patience for them to construct. And this why construction is not the job for me, because it is to much of patience that constructors need, which I don’t have in me. But it is really cool that geometry is in construction.

Geometry in aircraft Alex G per 6

In building airplanes geometry is essential. Engineers use different shapes to make support columns in the aircrafts wings. Wings need support so when they flap back and forth and wobble they don’t break off. Usually triangles are designed in the front of the wing to support the area in the front. The support columns that are shaped like triangles are inside the wing. Geometry is also used in the shape of the airplanes fuselage or main circular oval shape, area where the cockpit and passengers sit and where the wings are attached. A planes fuselage is made out of two cones and a cylinder. Geometry is also used in calculating altitude in aircraft.

Geometry in massive object transport.

Another field geometry is used in heavy object transport. For example your objective is to move a four hundred pound fountain basin, and you need to move it along a confined space. To accomplish this you could construct a right triangle around it and lift it onto a hand truck. Why a triangle? Triangles are the strongest of structural shapes because they consist of the fewest amount of angles and sides.

Geometry is applied in real-world like baseball. Baseball can be used in different aspects in baseball, likes the way the players play the game. Baseball has different angles, lines, and theoroms. A baseball diamond is formed into a "diamond", and in geometry terms its the pythagorean Theorom because it square.

theres three bases in baseball each base is exactly 90 feet apart from eachother, and which angle is form in a 90? its a right angle. How far does a cather have to throw to second base when a baserunner is running? well if you use this equation you will get your answer "A^2+B^2=C^2" i help you get your answer, but i havent really learn this theorom well i dont think i did, hahaha

And this is how geometry and the game of baseball is used in the real world. knowing how its used will help other different situations around the world. Well i have to go now, see you later read this haha i dont if it was good or not .

There are many ways to apply geometry to real-world situation. It's is just a matter of discovering how it is used. Many people such as astronomers and architects use it everyday, but sometimes people use it unknowingly. Many people may not believe this, but geometry is used everywhere we go, and one of the places where it is commonly used is in gymnastics as well as in the art of dance.

At first, you may not expect to see any form of geometry in gymnastics or in dance, but it is truly there. For example in gymnastics, a gymnast must learn how to do the “splits”. The “splits” are in fact a straight, 180 degree line that you create with your legs. Not only that, but when a gymnast does the splits, he or she creates a perpendicular bisector because your body from the waist up must be straight while your legs are spread across, with each leg being the same length. Geometry is also used in ballet in a number of ways. For instance, in ‘first position’, the feet must be put together so that they create a straight line, or a 180 degree angle. In ‘fourth position’, the feet are placed as if to create two parallel lines that are going in opposite directions. When ballet dancers do a grand jeté, they jump and do the splits in midair to create another 180 degree angle with their legs. Gymnasts and dancers also create a variety of angles by doing scales and arabesques that can create acute and obtuse angles with the use of your chest and legs. Also, when dancers spin, they completely turn 360 degrees to create a full circle.

Geometry is continually used in dance in many more ways, and you can constantly see them if you pay really close attention. It is always around us, and all we have to do is identify them. Lines and shapes will always be part of our everyday lives, and there is always so much more for us to learn about them. No matter what, math will always be a part of our lives.

Geometry is applied in every life activity. Geometry is used in many different sports and is very successful in way of life. Many famous coaches use geometry in order to make game plans or use thoughts or ideas.Geometry hepls us in many different ways of life. I have noticed that every where you go you use some type of math.

Addition , multiplication , and subtracion is also used in sports.
Smart game plans are made up of xs and os but you use geometry to figure out the shapes and angles of where all the players are going to be. For example in soccer you must know where the right side forward will be in order to see where the defender is unless you will be off sides. Geometry is used is games and little kids learn it with out knowing. When they play football or soccer they use techniques of geometry. Sports are very very active in mathematics and angles.

I have most defenitley realized that without geometry you cant do alot. Things as easy as buying food , playing a sport is all used with geometry. In football the quater back has to know how to move spin in 180 digree angle to dodge people and be correctley angled. Inductive and Deductive reasoning is used in every day life waking up with your alarm clock speaking, knowing what time school starts. As you can see Geometry is used in sports and even in waking up in the morning.\

I think Fransiscos view on the "Magical Cube" haha is very intresting.I had no idea how much geometry was used into this cube. The sides and the shape of the cube is so intresting. Realizing the way you can move the cube in order to match all the colors together is quite fun. Reading Fransiscos view on it was very intresting.

in response to francisco c. comment.
i think he is right when he says that the rubix cube is an example of geometry and other forms of math. even though i have tried many attempts to solve the cube it is very hard as francisco said we use "Algorithms". in the book that comes with the cube it explains many of these "Algorithms" there is one for when we only need one square left. i think that francisco did a really great job in explaining how his hooby uses geometry.

Algebra was created in many way by many different people, I would like to use the fact that arabics created a sort of it, after the 8th century they started getting interested in the arts and sciences, and it was left to them to understand all of this.

They made there contributions so we could understand alot of the math that is greek, they improved the number system of the Hindus.
The arabic people, first off created the word "algebra." There algebra was rhetorical.

They solved thinga like quadratic equations, and recognizing two soultions, they usuallly rejected negative solutions. The arabs worked with imntermediate equtions.
